The Dachshund Club of St. Louis, Inc

Celebrating its 71st year, The Dachshund Club of St. Louis, the oldest dachshund club west of the Mississippi River, hosted back-to-back Field Trials on April 12th and 13th at the Belclair Beagle Club in Coulterville, Ill. Whoa, back this truck up . . . Coulterville? Yep, our previous home in Bonne Terre, MO wasn’t able to sustain a trial this season. So after much searching, we found a great place. Matter-of-fact, we love it. Lots of bunnies, well-managed, immaculate grounds, and a great bunch of new Beagle friends.

Most trialers arrived on Friday in spite of doing a little wondering around the southern Illinois countryside due to the faulty directions we copied from an Internet map service. Never the less, all finally arrived and were treated to a chili supper provided by the Club and ably prepared by the Event Chairman and Secretary, Brenda Zook and Pam Reed. The evening was cool with a low of 42 degrees. Everyone slept well especially those staying in tents. Several Dachshunds did double duty this weekend – bunny hunter by day, bed warmer at night. Conditions were excellent for scenting on Saturday morning. After a hearty breakfast, roll call, and the close of entries, a total of 69 eager dachshunds, lots of beaters, six judges, and a good number of handlers began the trial.

Day Two

After breakfast, the second day of trials began on a clear gorgeous day after another rather cool night. Conditions were ideal. After finishing with the breakfast clean-up and if they were not assigned to beating the brush for bunnies, many took advantage of this beautiful setting. They sat on the Clubhouse grounds in their lawn chairs, able to see the trial unfolding just down the hill right before them. Total entries today: 51.

The Dachshund Club of St. Louis thanks all of the exhibitors, brush beaters (not a single one lost), judges, the Club members, and our new friend, Belclair Beagle Club member, Henry Phillips, who helped make this a very successful event.

Our next event (pending AKC approval) is our Fall Specialty Show on Thursday, September 18th at Purina Farms, Gray Summit, MO. Following the Thursday Specialty, Obedience, and Sweeps Events will be three all-breed shows. Please plan to attend and help us continue celebrating our 71st Anniversary. Andra O’Connell is the Conformation judge, Anne Crockett is judging Sweeps, and Bill Oxendale is judging Obedience (all judges are pending AKC approval). This show will be dedicated to the late Vaal "Smitty" Smith, our Club’s immediate past president. A special Memorial Trophy has been authorized by the Club for Best Bred-by Exhibitor dog. Come and join us for this event.
